Childhood obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, and Prevention — by Catherine Morgan (cross-posted at BlogHer)
The number of overweight children in the United States is growing at a very alarming rate. Kids are spending much less time being active, and much more time sitting in front of a TV, computer, or video-game. For this reason we are seeing an increase in children developing diseases (such as Type 2 Diabetes) that are normally associated with overweight adults. This is very troubling, especially considering that it is preventable.
So, how do you know if your child is overweight? And…What do you do?
Preventing your children from becoming overweight means adapting the way you and your family eat and exercise and the way you spend time together. Helping your children lead healthy lifestyles begins with you, the parent, and leading by example. — read full article

Diabetes is NOT a fat/obese disease! you need the gene. Does just being fat make you a diabetic? NO! As a long term type 2 I find the whole ‘get rich on obesity’ crowd getting way out of line. The fact is you NEED THE GENE for diabetes. I so see the “such as diabetes” but just once I’d like to come along a blog that puts all of this in perspective, being fat does not cause diabetes, if you do not have the gene in the family pool it’s not gonna happen. Do I mean get fat and dont worry about it? heck no. This scare tactic has made it hard for those of us who do have type 2, sterotype if you will.

Hi Sansai. I’m not trying to say that being fat makes you have diabetes…But, type 2 diabetes is normally associated with “adult onset”…and studies are showing that many more children are developing this disease at a young age…and the younger you are when you begin to have symptoms, the more likely you are to develop other serious illnesses that are also associated with diabetes. Does that make sense?
Anyway, thank you for commenting. And I’m sorry if you felt I was “stereotyping” you…I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, so I know what that is like.
