Are You Getting Enough Sleep? Take Poll

We all know that in order to be healthy (and happy) we need to get enough sleep. But still, most of us either don’t get enough sleep or our quality of sleep is lacking. Let face it, if you’re a mom you probably don’t get enough sleep. If you work you probably don’t get enough sleep. If you worry, you probably don’t get enough sleep. And if you’re a mom who works and also worries, you may have already forgotten what it means to get a good night’s sleep.

I don’t know about you, but I am tired all the time. I guess it doesn’t help that I stay up till all hours of the night doing my blog posts.

Nothing feels worse than hearing your alarm clock ring in the morning when your body is screaming for a few extra hours of rest. Given the opportunity, who wouldn’t get more sleep? If I had a choice between a year of unlimited Easter candy and a year of unlimited sleep, I’d say “Bye-bye Cadbury” and “Hello, bed!”

Many people don’t get as much sleep as they should. Since the invention of the light bulb, people sleep about 500 hours per year less than they used to. Whether we’re kept awake by our partner’s snoring or we stay up too late watching TV, we wake up tired, groggy, and cranky. No wonder the coffee industry does so well. Unfortunately, sleep deprivation has some side effects and they can’t all be remedied with a little extra caffeine.

It’s 12:30 at night and I am wide awake. Apparently my internal sleep clock did not realize that I’ve started a new regime, one in which I actually sleep. Instead of sleeping I’m surfing the net.

Here are a few tips to help you get enough sleep from 61 Days To Better Health

1. Try not to drink beverages with caffeine within six hours of your bedtime (that includes soda).

2. Turn off the t.v. and relax for 15 or 20 minutes before bedtime. This is a good time to read a book (I recommend a good inspirational book).

3. Don’t go to bed hungry…But also avoid heavy meals before bedtime.

4. Some foods may help promote sleep – milk, tuna, pumpkin,
artichokes, avocados, almonds, eggs, peaches, walnuts, apricots, oats,
asparagus, potatoes, and bananas.

5. Avoid alcohol before bedtime. It may initially help you fall
asleep, but it also can cause disturbances in your sleep. Having an
alcohol drink before bedtime may make it more likely that you will wake
up during the night.
